This year’s Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival is helping to put North Stradbroke Island well and truly on the map as an active leisure destination.
After global travel site Smarter Travel voted the island one of “10 Secret Places to Go Before Anyone Else” the Straddie Salute has harnessed some star power to help let the secret out.
Confirmed on the startline for this year’s event is the biggest lineup of celebrities and sporting identities that the island has ever hosted including Bondi Rescue TV star Andrew Reid (pictured), Olympic golden girl Susie O’Neill, rugby league legend Mat Rogers, Nova radio hosts Ash, Kip & Luttsy along with a number of other past sporting greats and media identities.
Event Director Steve Guise says showcasing the uniqueness of the event through race ambassadors and celebrities is a key driver for success and provides a significant spin-off for the island too. “Each year we capture some amazing event footage and imagery and we use that content to highlight how unique Straddie is as a race destination. A short race video that Reidy posted on social media recently received 3,000 views from a totally new audience for Straddie” Guise said.
In addition to the celebrities taking part this year’s event will also see previous race winners go head to head for the “Champion of Champions” title. Past champions have included pro triathletes Sarah Crowley and Adam Gordon, current National Cross Triathlon champion Brodie Gardner and rising stars Sophie Malowiecki and Annelise Jefferies.
This year’s event also features a new StraddieKidz duathlon for 7 to 12 year olds, consisting of two 400m run legs at Point Lookout Oval and a 2km cycle. The kids event is being used as a fundraiser for Dunwich School with $20 from every island entry being donated to the school P&C.
The 2017 Straddie Salute Presented by Stradbroke Ferries will be held on Saturday May 20 and island businesses and residents are encouraged to get involved in the 10th anniversary celebrations.
