1) Are dogs allowed on the island and is there accommodation or camping locations that will accept them?

There are a number of dog friendly accommodation options at all 3 townships, Stradbroke Island Holidays can arrange this accommodation - they can be contacted on (07) 3821 0266 or www.stradbrokeholidays.com.au  Pets are also permitted at the foreshore camping sites on Main and Flinders Beach.  Dogs can travel on both the water taxi and vehicle ferry, provided they are kept on a leash at all times.

2) Are there patrolled beaches and when are they patrolled?

Stradbroke Ferries is a proud sponsor of the Point Lookout Surf Lifesaving Club. The Point Lookout SLSC and qualified Lifeguards patrol Main and Cylinder Beaches all year round. Beach Patrol Hours: From the commencement of Queensland September School Holidays to the first weekend in May, weekends and public holidays from 8am - 5pm (Sat), 8am to 2pm (Sun).  Extended hours during peak periods are 8am to 6pm (Sat) and 8am to 3pm (Sun).  A lifeguard service is provided during weekdays year round. Times are subject to change.  For your safety only swim between the flags and if you are unsure of the conditions please speak to the lifesavers.

3) Are there restaurants and other places to eat on the island?

There are a variety of restaurants and cafes at Point Lookout, with fresh local seafood often on the menu.  Some of these are located where you can take in the magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at a number of different locations.  Both Amity and Dunwich also have cafes and clubs that provide an extensive range of meals.

4) Can I go whale watching on Straddie?

Land based whale watching is extremely popular on the Island as the headland at Point Lookout is approximately 35m above sea level, where excellent views are obtained. Humpback whales can be seen between June and November from a number of vantage points.  Each year in the Southern Hemisphere humpback whales migrate from their summer Antarctic feeding grounds, along Australia's continental coastline to tropical regions to breed and calve in winter.

5) Can I hire a car or bike on the island?

Stradbroke Ferries have a number of rental cars that can be hired and picked up from Dunwich.  Push bikes can be hired from Dunwich Sports and Hobbies in Dunwich, the Manta Lodge or Fishes Cafe, both located at Point Lookout.  If you are taking your own bike to the island then you will have to travel with it on the vehicle ferry as they are not permitted on the water taxi or the local bus service.

6) Can I take a caravan or trailer to the island and how much does it cost?

Caravan and trailers, which are attached to a vehicle, can travel to the Island.  The cost is $28.00 per metre (return) from the tow ball to the end of the trailer.

7) Can I travel just as a passenger?

The Water Taxi can cater for up to 130 passengers and takes 25 minutes.  Bookings are not required.  Alternatively foot passengers are welcome on the vehicle ferry.

8) Do I need a 4WD permit? Where can I purchase it from and how much does it cost?

 4WD permits are required when driving on the beach and an annual permit at a cost of $33 can be purchased from Stradbroke Ferries Cleveland Office, on board our vessels or from our Dunwich Office. They are also available from other outlets on the island, however it is recommended that it be purchased prior to departure. Your driver's licence details are required.

9) Do I need to book my campsite and who do I contact?

All campsites, including foreshore camping, must be booked and paid for prior to arrival. You will need to book in advance in peak times such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and school holidays.  For bookings contact Straddie Holiday Parks on 1300 551 253.

10) How do I get to North Stradbroke Island and do I need a 4WD?

North Stradbroke is easily accessible by water taxi or vehicle ferry which departs from Middle Street Cleveland.  The three townships of Dunwich, Amity and Point Lookout are all linked by sealed roads that are accessible by conventional vehicles; however a 4WD is required for driving on the beaches.  Bookings for the car ferry are essential.

11) How long does the trip take and can I purchase food on board the vessel?

The vehicle ferry crosses Moreton Bay in approximately 50 minutes.  A licenced cafe is available on both the Quandamooka and Minjerribah vehicle ferries.

12) What is the cost of travelling to Straddie and is there a discount for seniors?

The cost for a car on the vehicle ferry is $135.00 return which includes the legal number of passengers.  If you are the holder of a Senior's Card the cost is $101.00 return.  The cost of the water taxi is $17.00 return for adults and $12.00 return for students and seniors.  Pre-payment for vehicle ferry tickets is required at time of booking.

13) What shops are available on the island?

Point Lookout has a number of boutiques, gift shops and clothing stores, where everything from bathers, sunglasses, hats, beach towels, souvenirs and clothing can be purchased.  You will also find all of your camping and fishing equipment at either Dunwich or Point Lookout.  In addition to this there are local convenience stores, fruit shop, bakeries and butcher that will cater for your every need.

14) Where can I go camping and do I need a 4WD?

Main and Flinders Beach are two foreshore campsites which are accessible by 4WD vehicles only.  If you decide to camp on the beach, remember a 4WD permit is necessary. Camping permits must be booked and purchased prior to arrival and tent tags must be attached to tents.

Main Beach is popular with surf boarders and bodysurfers who enjoy the big swells. The waves are large and powerful and the views are spectacular. The headland is the best vantage point for watching the surfing action and spotting dolphins. Main Beach is best during northerly winds.

Cylinder Beach is a picturesque cove, which is popular with families because the waves are often smaller and therefore it is perfect for sun bathing and swimming also.

16) Which beaches can I go 4WDriving on?

Beach driving is permitted on Main Beach and Flinders Beach. Access to Main Beach is from George Nothling Drive, Point Lookout or the Causeway entry off Tazi Road (which is the road that runs west to east through the centre of the island. Access to Flinders Beach is from Point Lookout or Amity Point.  Avoid driving on beaches within two hours of high tide and where possible drive on the section of the beach between low and high water marks.  Driving on the sand dunes is not allowed.
