North Stradbroke Island

Stradbroke Ferries was formed in 1963 initially to convey purpose built bin trucks to transport mineral sands to the mainland.

Our first vessel "Myora" was built at Evans Deakin in Brisbane and made its maiden voyage in mid 1964 from Redland Bay to Dunwich.

Stradbroke Ferries has financed and developed its facilities in Dunwich and Cleveland including the original dredging of Fison Channel at Cleveland.  This dredging enabled us to move our operations from Redland Bay to Toondah Harbour in 1972.

"Moongalba" was ordered in 1973 and went into service the following year.  In 1987 our first water taxi "Spirit of Stradbroke" was brought into service.  Our latest water taxi "Escape to Stradbroke" has a seating capacity of 130.

Our latest vessels "Quandamooka" and "Minjerribah" have been constructed to cater for both commercial and private vehicles and due to their construction they can travel safely in almost any weather conditions.

"Minjerribah" has a lift for the disabled and elderly to enable them to access our licenced cafe and viewing deck.

The scenic trip from Cleveland to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island takes approximately 50 minutes on the vehicle ferry. During the trip across Moreton Bay you will have the opportunity to view other scenic islands such as Peel and Coochiemudlo.

There are approximately 11 return vehicle ferry and 13 return water taxi services commencing from as early as 5.30am and returning from the island up until 6.30pm. Additional trips are available at peak holiday times and weekends.

We are the largest marine operator in Moreton Bay and are committed to providing reliable and safe travel to our customers.

Stradbroke Ferries has always had a close association with the Aboriginal people of North Stradbroke Island and since the first vessel (Myora) came into operation they have at times chosen names that are significant to the islands' cultural history.

The Quandamooka people are recognised as the traditional owners of the area which encompasses North Stradbroke Island and many of the surrounding islands and waterways. The Quandamooka vessel came into operation in 1994 and at that time was the largest vessel that Stradbroke Ferries had in service.

The Minjerribah (which is the Aboriginal name for North Stradbroke Island) commenced operation in 2005 and is the sister ship to the Quandamooka.

The Minjerribah was fitted with a lift that would allow people with disabilities and the elderly access to the upstairs passenger areas. This vessel is driven by MTU Detriot engines and was constructed in the Pearl River Delta in China.

During peak holiday times or when these vessels are undergoing maintenance, other vessels are placed onto this service.
